I love the feeling of hot oatmeal on a cold day. I used to eat instant oatmeal quite a bit because it was convenient to keep a box at work. The problem was that it didn’t stick with me. I always felt hungry within an hour. Click the photo to jump straight to the recipe.
Then I learned that instant oats are the most processed and ground up, which means your body doesn’t have to do the work to break them down. By digesting the food faster, I was hungry faster! I had been looking for a tasty and EASY alternative to instant oatmeal packets, but then I found a BETTER way to make homemade packets with whole oats! I found the information at The Yummy Life, and then adjusted it to meet my needs.
The best thing about this concept is that you can make a bunch of oatmeal packets at once, so breakfast is quick and easy. When it’s time to eat, there is no measuring or calculating. You just dump the bag out into a bowl, add water, and stick it in the microwave.
We can ALL find time to do that, even on a busy day! These are also portable, if you prefer to make it at work or on the road. This “instant” oatmeal is definitely more satisfying and keeps me full longer than traditional oatmeal packets. I am confident it is because of the whole oats, oat bran, chia seeds, etc.
Start by preparing your bags. I used snack bags, and the size was perfect. I created labels so that I can reuse the bags and so I didn’t have to write the same thing over and over! You can download my labels here if you would like. They were designed for Avery 8160 labels. I used a specialty font, so don’t be alarmed if the typeface looks different on your copy.
I intended to make 30 packets, but I ran out of oats. (Obviously it would have made sense to make sure I had the ingredients before I started!) I had enough oats to make 10 packets, so that’s what I did this time. 😉 I am making my two favorite flavors – Cranberry Almond and Cranberry Orange Pecan. These are great to make together because you only change a couple ingredients for a totally different flavor! I hate to buy a bunch of different ingredients that I will barely use.
Once your bags are labeled, start filling them like an assembly line! Start by adding the 1/3 cup oats to each bag. Once the oats are in the bag, it will stand up so that you can add the rest of the ingredients easier!
Add the rest of your dry ingredients on top of the oats. I do one ingredient at a time and add it to all the bags. This makes it much quicker and easier! After the oats, add the following to each bag:
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds
- 1/16 teaspoon (pinch) salt
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons powdered nonfat milk
- 2 teaspoons oat bran
- 2 packets Splenda (or your preferred sweetener)
I had a hard time finding the oat bran. I finally found it at Giant Eagle in the all natural section. They also sell it on Amazon, but I wanted it immediately of course. 😀
After these ingredients are all in the bags, your base recipe is done. At this point, we need to add the extra items to give them unique flavors.
For the cranberry almond flavor, add the following to each bag:
- 20g Craisins
- 7g sliced almonds
For the cranberry orange pecan flavor, add the following to each bag:
- 1 teaspoon dried orange peel
- 20g Craisins
- 7g of pecans
As you know from my post on measuring, I’m a big fan of the food scale for accuracy! You can use more if you prefer, but be sure to adjust your nutrition stats. I used these amounts specifically so I could keep the recipes at 7 points+. In the past, I wouldn’t have used dried fruit or nuts (just to keep my points down), but I find the oatmeal MUCH more satisfying with them included.
Once you have added the final ingredients, your packets are finished! Close the snack bags and put them into a larger labeled storage bag. I used a quart size bag this time and could barely squeeze 8 packets into it. A gallon size bag would be better if you are making a large quantity at once.
When you are ready to eat, simply dump a bag out into your bowl. Add 1 cup of water and microwave on high for 3 minutes. Let stand in microwave for about 2 minutes to allow the oatmeal to cool and thicken. These are VERY HOT when they are done. You can see they cook up thick and creamy!
I love having these on hand for weekday mornings and for those weekends that I just don’t feel like cooking! We all have those days, and having these on hand allows me to have a quick and healthy hot breakfast. The printable recipe is below. Let me know what you think if you try these!!
